Some of you may remember me from a while ago.
Anyway, I'm trying to create a PaperMario type game. I've never programmed a 3D game before and I have little modeling experience so I was thinking a paper mario style game (non RPG) would be basic enough for a biggenner's first 3D game. If it's not a picture then virtually every other building, tree, etc consists of a few shapes and polygons (and that I can handle).
I've been eying the Irrlicht engine for quite some time now. I'm confused on what all I need to get started. I still have no idea what Quake maps are. I know a C++ compiler is needed. What else?
Also, I have 3D Studio Max 6. In what way can I use it with Irrlicht. Is it just for modeling and animating or can it do levels as well with it. If It can please direct me to any tutorials dealing with this.
Also, would I need to learn to handle DirectX or something? If I do then they could at least mention it on the site and not leave n00bs like me hangin'. This would be the first 3D engine I work with and I desperatly need help!!
ARRGH So many unanswered questions. I'm lost!
Ok, there's no need to learn about DX to use Irrlicht, unless if you want to customize the engine.
3D studio max CAN be used for levels, though you should avoid making them very big or detailed. If you want big/detailed levels, you have to use a BSP editor. If you do not know how to use 3D Studio Max very well, I suggest you try Anim8or.
Hope that's what you wanted to know.
