detailmap3.jpg ....

detailmap3.jpg

One horrifying filename, that makes me shiver everytime I read it....

Not because of the name, of course. But because of the overuse of this once nice detail - map, i cannot take any more screenshot of terrain with that detailmap. Have you looked at the Screenshot of the month for September? Three of them use it and in my eyes they look just too similar, because of that. Please, pretty please, don't use it anymore. Maybe in a year or two I can calmly look at that map again, but if you can, please use a different one. (e.g. CG Textures is a great source).

When looking at irrlicht and terrain, one can come to the conclusion that the detailmap3.jpg is hardcoded into the engine ;-)

Please, all detailmap3.jpg users don't take it too seriously or as an offend, more like an advice for a better visual quality. I believe using a different map will pay off, at least with a possible vote by me at the monthly contest ;-)

we are mainly programmers not artists.
we use what we have. why should we search a lot, just because others use that too?
of course, the last version, it will be replaced. but for testing thingies out, its perfect.
i dont see your problem. never saw a complete game with detailmap3.jpg
but in the competition, one person made a realistic water, and under that there was that detailmap. so what? he tried to show the water, not the detailmap!

You are using GrassSceneNode in Irr 1.5? Nice detailmap.

Yep 1.5

Did you get it working?
Notes that you had some problems with height.
Are you using a TerrainSceneNode?

Offtopic (sry): Yeah. I'm using terrain scene node. Is your terrain scaled?

Topic: post detailmap that we could use with terrain instead detailmap3. I'm quite sticked to it :D

Well, as MasterD told: CG Textures is a great source http://www.cgtextures.com/
There is a registration now, but you can choose any best fitted for your mission.
I used Texture: #3011.

Yes, your are exactly right. We are mainly programmers, so there is still some artist left within us :)
I didn't meant that every test mustn't use what ships with Irrlicht. But submitting for the competition is something like the last version, no? I mean, you enter to win and promote Irrlicht, so take 1 minute to think what can easily be enhanced and 5 minutes to perform.

Well, first off I thought to initially start this thread with another detailmap, but that detailmap might easily become, what detailmap3.jpg is of today, and I didn't dare to push an innocent texture into a crowd of greedy programmers so that it can be raped shamelessly :twisted:

if founding a working artist would be so easy, i wouldnt have hard time.

but agreed, in competition, ppl shouldnt use detailmap3.jpg xD

we should make it a function
since 60% of peaple using detail maps are using detailmap3.jpg!
btw it s the only detail map i have tried :lol:

I think the main issue about the detailmap3 is that it's not grass. It looks more like small stones. So it looks wrong when used with green textures.
