Blockworld

Each randomly generated world is made of approximately 10 million cubes, which can all be modified. It can run at 100-150 fps on an average computer. It has real-time shadows for all the cubes, and flowing water, with support for multiple players on different computers interacting with the world at the same time.

You have to admit minecraft hit a nerve in the human psyche.

Bah. Unless it's another kind of nerve, dwarf fortress struck first!

I actually don't get the whole minecraft popularity, I've played it a couple of times since everyone was telling me how awesome it was, but I can't say I feel the urge to play more

Minecraft is not a game that everyone can get, specially since the game has no real objective. In my words: it's a game where you get stuff to make stuff to get more stuff and build stuff. Since you can do almost anything in that game and you really don't get any rewards besides seeing what you have created, it's hard to see appeal for a lot of people.

However, Minecraft appears to have opened a Pandora's box of procedurally generated worlds, enemies, etc. so each time you play the game, the world is different and you have to do things differently.

by looking at all the crazy creations people have done with minecraft, i would say that minecraft is for people who have way too much free time and they don't know what else they can do besides spending it on minecraft.
