Anyone doing an interesting game?

I posted this in reply to another topic but it might apply to some other project too.

Hmmm. You should go to gamedev and read the help wanted sticky and help messages.

You usually end up being flamed for a post like this but most people stay civil here. Smile

I think this is a dream project for most programmers, artists and game designers. But it's out of our reach as hobby developers. The budgets are usually around $10 000 000 for making a game like this. I would expect the team to look something like this

Programmers 12-18
Artists 25
designers 1 lead, 2 story writers, 10 level designers
Testers 10 (in the end of the project)

Well anyway I think as a noob programmer/designer you come in with tons of ideas and energy and it just normally ends up with nothing in a few months since no one with the right experience will want to help you.

I have several times started out making a normal single player RPG. It always ends with me being the only one left and the project run out of steam. So my suggestion is that if you can round up the people for single player RPG, 1 programmer (you I guess), 1 designer, 1 artist (for 3D, including animation). You take the lead in the project and spend all you waking hours with helping out with programming and coordinating the project I would be interested in making a RPG though not an MMORPG.

Just making a single player RPG is a huge thing to make. Hmmm well for a small team it's HUGE!!! But I am willing to give it a try if you can handle the rest and you are willing to write that in blood. Smile

Hmmm enough ranting.
I am a programmer that has been working since 1997 (professionally) with developing software.
I am a good C++ programmer
I have built a 3D engine myself in DX, but why spend the time when excellent engines like irrlicht exists.

Well that is my suggestion. If you have a better one let me know Smile

bad enough, what exal stated is quite true. but exal forgot one fact, project teams for professional game development also often are working for years on their projects (and that about 10 hours a day)...

because i am a dreamer like you (not meant in a bad way!) no game i ever started to develop was ever finished. ok, i always tried to do it all on my own, and i always wanted to make a big-style-game like you want. although i did not finish any game in years until right now, it was an invaluable learning process.

my next try will be a 3d strategy tank game, where one can choose a chassis and a turret to create his own tank. knowing i won't come quite far, i just love trying it.

good luck with your idea, it will give you lots of valuable information for further games/ideas

until I do not create myself tools with which the game can be done fast and comfortably, I don't begin the game....
RPG is not a FPS, it takes time to create the task engine and the player character object, as well as NPC's behaviour depending on it..If this all is set in your head, then I will be glad to spend my free time creations in irrlicht under your command
what is this thing...

well right now we're developing Doom4, Quake5, FEAR2, UT2008, for the Xbox360, PC, PS3,Nintendo Revolution and ....Mac?

Edited: you guys are right; that "help wanted ad" at gamedev idea sounds interesting for any serious programmer wanting to make some bucks $$$$
