cool height maps?

Post by MoL »

Well I really love the parralax mapping in 0.10 and I wanted to try it with some other textures but it always looked bad :/

So my question is how do you make as nice height maps as there are in the PerPixelLightning Demo ?

Would be great if somebody could help me :)

Thx in advance

Concrete with hightmap

I think you get the best results by just using another greyscale texture for a heightmap with reduced contrast. I doesnt look good if you over do it with the "height" of the height map. Subtle is better. It makes the material look alive but doesnt put alot of strain on the graphicas card.
Should put something witty here I suppose.

I have got the photoshop plugin but it doesnt even look nearly as good as the one from the demo. Even playing around with alot of settings(brightness, contrast.......) didnt do any good :(

Thats pretty cool. Can you make it o the bumps are smaller.. like more finely grained?

If you already have access to a normal map, you can use the displacement map creator for good height maps, which you'll find here.

Here's a screenshot of one I made using a normal map and texture I found off the internet, and then converted with the displacement map creator: Image
