best engine for outdoor scenes and mmo style games?

Post by gavin »

(could've swarn I just posted this thread but i cant see it anywhere so here goes again)

:P First up I know an mmorpg is loads of work even for large teams of very experienced people, and I don't plan on making something of release quality, rather just to learn about it - If you aim high and fail you will still have learnt far more than if you just do something you already know how to do.

I wold eventually LOVE to put my thoughts into action but for now its just not feasible!

anyway - Just wondering which engine would be best for an mmorpg, set mainly in large open spaces.

Also there would possibly be more items etc on screen at any point than a "standard" mmorpg- how would much would this effect speed (both engine and network-wise)

By the way - by "massive" the game idea I have is kind of scalable - ie it could be anywhere from a hundred up to thousands of people and the idea would still work pretty much the same (although it would be preferrable to be larger..of course  )

thanks in advance
Mike

That is a ridiculous answer, and lazy as well.

There isn?t one single best answer to that question.
Anyway, here is a good list of engines for comparison:

My aren't we touchy!!! :D

Let's see, I can guess the original poster has a budget of zero on this. So, Nel, being an open source engine written for an MMPOG, is ideal. If you want to learn the basics, why start elsewhere?

Secondly, the original poster will probably drop this within two weeks, so why not point them to Google? Sure I could list a bunch of websites, but how hard is it search Google for MMPOG engine 3d etc. etc.? Call me lazy, but that's the result you can expect when you ask such a question.

Research your topic, then come back ask some questions, and I'll give better answers. Otherwise, my answer was pretty much all that was needed.
