Axis rotation

I was looking for the axis rotation funtions and code...etc. i looked around the source, but i couldn't fine the code or maybe i was looking at it but didn't know. 
i would like to understand how the whole axis rotation works, i tried to do some math to figure out how the axis changes direction,but without moving the x or y positions. 
to anybody that can help me out thanks alot
