stealing people's faces

Post by bitplane »

You will need:
1 Photographer with digital camera(s) and lots of memory
1 Canvasser with silver tongue
1 Blue background board (people expect these to be blue)
100 pre-printed questionnaires
2 clipboards (got to look the part)
20 pens (people will steal them)
1 megaphone (optional)
1 busy high street

Stop people in the street and offer them immortality for a few moments of their time. if they don't mind their picture being taken, start with the questionnaire then snare them with the 'my face is free' clause. snap them with the camera.
put them all on the internet as a free supply of pd people faces for games.

so.. other than it being November, is this idea flawed in any way, like-
has someone already done it? are painted maps the way forwards and photos a waste of time? what about the getting sued part?

Well they would have to sign something first so you would have to have a contract on that clipboard. :)

I, for one, would find it pretty freaky if I'm playing an FPS and I suddenly see myself as an NPC, but a cool idea none the less.

well, I dunno; with all this paranoia around. If someone approached me telling me all this stuff I think I'd freak out!

Fine print, m'boy!
Tell them your from some newspaper doing a "What do you think?" column, ask them some lame question from the headlines, snap their picture and have them sign a "standard" release with the fineprint saying they sign away all rights to the image to all other publication affiliates and subsidiaries of your newspaper...one of which happens to be a game company.
Then just drop a stack of photocopied "bitplane news" off at bookstore to be official.

:D

have them sign something like
'i hereby grant permission to the publisher to publish the results of this questionaire, and use any pictures taken during the interview, of me or otherwise, in any way the publisher sees fit'
and there you go ;)
there are probably better ways to get a hold of some face-pictures tho,
what about schoolpictures from the 50's or 60's, surely any copyrights on those are expired, and there's got to be tons of old schoolpictures floating around online with all the old freaks trying to find eachother
if you're looking for me, start looking on irc, i'm probably there.

have you looked at www.fineart.sk?

They are a fee service with a lot of hi-rez pics designed for 3d gaming. They are bound to have a terms-of-use. I'm pretty sure their stuff shows up on the Poser sites for texture maps and stuff, and those guys are very tight about legality.

Don't forget to morph the faces together to create "new" faces. :)

Don't be retarded haven't any of you been outside in the last 20 years?!

where as 30 year olds will keep walking all the -25 people will offer you a blow job with that picture and never make enough money to sue let alone recognize there own face on some indie game that nobody will ever purchase and most likly you'll never build.

Why is it I've been on this forum almost 2 years and still never met anyone doing gently caress all... ?

just download pictures on the net and check for watermarks for god sake 3.50 will buy you a month of a dating website where the picture is already lisecenced to you... well enough to win with a good lawyer anyways. =)

btw did you know in america and I'm sure many other countries you're allowed to film and take pictures in public areas?

grow out of your shell already people.

oh and grow some balls I'd do it despite the laws.

I am the law!!

@armen- I think you need to get people to sign stuff if they're still alive, and going through the obituaries isn't anywhere near as much fun as hassling beautiful girls in the street :)

@midnight
the idea is to steal the rights to people's faces, actually using them is a different kettle of fish. and if you're saying its fine to steal faces you'll be happy to know i've used your smiling picture in an ad campaign: 'I found the horse of my dreams at www.beastforum.com ' hahah
Also, you'll be sorry to hear that your god-given right to abuse the poor doesn't stand up in the civilized world (;)) - over here we have this thing called legal aid, where if someone is broke they get free legal advice and representation. it's called freedom or something like that, if you've ever heard of it!

@dhenton
awesome site, quality wank bank material! oh and textures too... I didn't find those yet but I'll keep looking though!

I'm with you Afecelis, I'd never give my face away to random geeks on the street either, but hey I'm not a celeb-worshiper, tv-addict or a beautiful young woman.

I think if you came out honestly to people and said "Hey, I'm making a video game and I need faces for people, are you interested in having your picture taken" that eventually someone would say yes.

Something tells me people might find this a little odd :)

LOL Midnight. Well everything in your post is true. Except one thing video taping and taking photos in public places in America can be illegal depending on where you are. Bus stations, Traon stations, Airports, Subways, & etc... watch your back or you could end up behind bars.

afecelis, feel better man I'm sure your day will only get better.

Scaring if i understand you properly. That means that any tourist who is just a little bit careless or simply does not know could get busted. That can't be true, please elaborate.

Its very much so true, I used to take photos of the subway systems where I live untill I got yelled at. Also I see it happen everyday while taking the subway to and from work. :( I'm not joking about it. You basicly need a paper from the state that you are in saying to are taking photos. But with out that you could get in trouble.
