this project discusses here -- http://irrlicht.sourceforge.net/phpBB2/ ... hp?t=19705
so it would be good if you post there your future questions.

and about your question:
loader very simple, it loads text file. from all DAT files only media.dat is binary ( it is simple ZIP-archive. Irrlicht provides great support of ZIP archives so its used ). All other DAT files are text files: config.dat is a configuration file. Open it in Notepad, it is easy to undertand the structure. All other DAT files defines the Solar System ( all objects, planets, moons, belts are defined here ).

Indeed you do not need sources to make changes in DAT files. but only in sources ZIP there is _dev folder which contains file "Map format.txt" that explains all the format of the format.

Reading only partially? And pasing will be required, the complexity will depend on the text structure. If you use XML (also a text format) parsing is usually simpler than arbitrary text.

Ayn C/C++ book (just as all other programming languages) covers this stuff. It's basic programming stuff. Neither Irrlicht specific, nor 3d related.
