For most of the time the channel is kind of quiet, but that doesn't mean nobody is reading. It's quite a good idea to stay on a bit, as some of the people are busy debugging and stuff ;)

The Irrlicht community is not organized very good... I know at least one person who already hacked fog into the engine (OGL+DX) and who was experimenting with volumetric fog last time he talked about it.

Other options beneath the q3Radiant editor (which is included in the freely downloadable Quake3 SDK, see id-software) are gtkRadiant (opensource) and Valve Hammer (The Halflife Editor, freely downloadable, think it creates Q3 maps, too).
