Dunno, but can't you raytrace from camera to "Sun", and disable the effect if the ray collides a non-transparent object in-between?

If you don't want .NET dependencies, remove or don't check the "managed code" option in your project setting. This is what that option means. And no, it doesn't "suck", it's one of the best IDE out there, and while you may prefer another, please do not insult the work of hundreds...
