How do you do your models for your games? What program are you using, i mean. And how do you do your textures, any good tips?

As a noob, it would be good know some tips especially for textures. When i use mapping with 3DS Max, i get cool result, but when i load it with Irrlicht, it looks like bunch of ****... (http://img171.imageshack.us/my.php?image=refyq1.png link for my pic. It sucks, doesnt it?)

Thats because 3dmodels not only consist of visible parts, but also invisible like normals which determine how the model is lit. Apart from that, there are "smoothing groups" and...
Sometimes choosing a different import/export format helps. At the end it means that you only get constant good results once you understood how the different parts work together. As a private person you are only able to get this insight using an OPEN SOURCE program like BLENDER. The forums help you when you get stuck, no good chances with the commercial guys. With Max you are either a professional or you get only that far without dedicating your whole life to 3D. Guess how i know. Well, really throw that Max in the bin and use something with a huge non-commercial community. Much, much better, but still not easy.
