If I remember right Hammer has a pretty restrictive license. Not sure you can use it for anything but HL games. We were using it with the Torque engine for a while, but now it appears we can't even do that any more :(

FULLY free editors

planetquake.com/quark

getic.njoydeco.com (includes a free bsp compiler, dunno if good for a bsp3 q3 loader)

x files maps...not lightmaps last time I checked.. :(
http://www.delgine.com/

A free HL BSP compiler (someone is working to add hl bsp support to irrlitch)
ZHLT compiling tools (use google)

If the hl loader in irllitch is done, safest path would be surely Quark + zhlt.(to compile as hl bsp)

Post nº 23867325 bout bsp ...and yet I don't have it clear.. ;)

q3map2 bsp compiler is NOT free, from what I have been available to read; not free if you use in a comercial project. Hammer editor (to produce the map) is even more restrictive: only Hl game, or hl mods.

So stick to those I mentioned. If u know a better path,(if free!) tell...
Finally making games again!
