What libraries do you need?

Post by dudMaN »

Hi everyone.

i'm trying to make a lib that will go with irrlicht to make a full game engine(or atleast close).

currently i have networking done, but what else do you need? (please, not physics)

Thanks :D

Aight ive started on pathfinding:

* Networking
& Pathfinding
[* = done, & = working, $ = in progress]

A complete engine would involve Graphics, Physics, Sound, Networking, and AI.

There are a few wrappers around already; you really could just grab them and mash them all together.

Inputlib (Joysticks!) is still missing.
Also TrueType fonts are rather useful, but might be part of the GUI sometimes.

ok, truetype sounds good, i'll have to study the file format and see if i can write a parser capable of parsing it.. :D

joystick input lib might be possible, but it would be painful to get it working on windows and linux. :(

and sound sounds pretty hard :P

Someone already made a TTF importing thingy... but it was only DX I think... you could work with that as a base if you want to go that way.

There is a cross platform joystick library as well as many others here: http://plib.sourceforge.net/whats_inside.html I was hoping to take a shot at it with one of my games but haven't gotten that far yet.

for sound try IrrKlang http://www.ambiera.com/irrklang/index.html
Its written by the guy who wrote Irrlicht, has the same coding style and is supported by irrlicht. (oh... and its cross platform :D )

Improving the Input of the system would be nice. Also need some kinda of advance physics engine or really good one that can handle all types of physics simulations.

I recommend using a separate input system. SDL's IO Library is what I have tried with good success. You can find it at http://libsdl.org/
