Stereo rendering capabilities

Post by Bob Finnie »

Hi all,
At the company where I work, we provide GIS and planning tools for various agencies in the military. One of our latest tools is a 3D terrain visualisation showing unit/troop movement and various other map features. I used irrlicht for the rendering of this and my next task is to turn this into 'true' 3D. I have decided to provide two methods, red/cyan anaglyph and LCD shutter glasses. My question to you all is - has anyone used LCD glasses before? could you recommend a set? we have a small budget for initial testing ~ around £200. The main points for consideration are that I can access the interface via irrlicht, I assume most of them use a USB infrared interface. has anyone written any code or used anything like this before.
My next question is regarding anaglyph and I'm hoping that 'sio' is reading this :D . I did read on the forums that some people have looked into anaglyph before but it seems that the topic was never resolved. sio - is there any chance you could share some code with me? It would sure help out a lot!

Any help regarding the use of LCD glasses would be a great help, I'm new to this and thought I would ask the experts on the forum first before I made a hack of it..

Thanks in advance everybody.

Kind regards,

Bob

I only used the X800 glasses niko had on his blog recently (http://www.irrlicht3d.org/pivot/entry.php?id=502). They work without problems out of the box. The thing is that the NVidia driver can be configured to adapt the projection matrices on the fly. Each time a frame is rendered the driver chooses either left or right eye (for LCD shutters obviously in sync with the polarization) and changes the projection matrix accordingly. So you simply render the usual image (you can even show this on the monitor if the stereo is only configured for one output).
You should get the z800 for a very small amount of money, the x800 also features rotation tracking. Together with the Wii it should make a wonderfull VR system for under 1000 Euro.

Yes if you want Red/Blue rendering you can enable it using the NVidia drivers for any 3D application, you can leave your irrlicht app as-is as long as you display it in fullscreen.

Cheers.

Thanks for the replys..
I was hoping to take control of the stereo rendering myself in code, i.e - draw left & right eyes and flip them. however, I looked at the nVidia site and I guess that will be just as good - I hope.

With regards to the glasses, I decided to get the eDimensional set, £50 for one pair and the interface and £25 per extra pair of glasses.

Still, if anyone has a code solution, I'd still be interested.

Thanks again

Bob noxious
