free new tool for artists

Post by juliusctw »

Hello

I made a tool which you can load your world mesh file and view it as a person walking in your world mesh. If you have played World of Warcraft or Second life, i basically made a tool which you can load your mesh as the world and you can pick characters to walk inside it.

I am currently programming a game, and i thought i can release this part of the program since it might be useful for people. You can download the tool here http://iamar.chieh.googlepages.com/downloads

Screenshots and example videos are here http://iamar.chieh.googlepages.com/blenderworldviewer

the documentation on how to use it is here
http://iamar.chieh.googlepages.com/documentation

The game i am currently programming is the main website , and it is at iamar3d.com . The screen shots for my game is here http://iamar.chieh.googlepages.com/foto

The programs are completely free for you to use, I also provide the blend files so you can play with it. If you also want the blend file for the characters, (fully animated and rigged) you can download it here
http://iamar.chieh.googlepages.com/contribute

that's about it, i hope people can find some use for it...

Nice, downloading and checking it out. Might come in handy. I like your accent btw ;)

And, just as a completely useless question, why is there two cursors in the vid?

//Edit
Runs fine for me, except for a firewall warning :)

Wow I just wanted to say your writing is great! :D I am inspired!

I just read some of your education essays and they make alot of sense, I will be sure to finish them.

Maybe I will start writing essays for fun too, I miss doing that in school. (English was one of the subjects I was actually interested in.)

Thank you for the positive reply

Hello

And thank you for the positive replies. The download you guys have right now is only the preliminary version. In the real version, you'll be able to script what going into the world and have your friends come into your world as another character. The work for that is mostly done, i'm just testing all the networking. This is why when you run the program is connects to the network.

there are 2 cursors in the screen b/c some how the video recording gets the invisible cursor when its not suppose to. But in the real program it doesn't have 2 cursors.

i'm glad you like the writing, I had some pretty radical ideas there so i'm never sure how people would react to it, especially teachers,

the purpose of the 3d world i'm building is for education purpose, and try to make it fun for people. Its a lot of work, but i think the contribution i can make for the society would be worth it.

this doesn't work for me either: I get the same message as Nodtveidt :(

can I just say something about your "Mia" character...
the first time I saw her in a screenshot, I thought to myself "reminds me of Tifa..."

but when I looked at your media files, you've actually taken the exact Tifa's eye and face textures out of FinalFantasy 7
(trust me, I know ;) )

edit: i just noticed, things are worse, and also a little too obvious. Its not just the texture data.

please be careful about this, and consider using your own content (or something under a public licence)

(yeah, this is my first post, but I've been lurking around for a long while.
I don't post much, unless its something VERY important. )

hello

The character was originally given to me from one of the contributors. Since then I have also put a lot of work into the art. But i don't advertise that I made her by myself. If you can point out where I claimed I made her, I'd be happy to erase it. Nor did i ever attempted to profit off her. I was simply trying to make something useful for people.

I think your concern is that somehow i intentionally stole some artwork, but that was never my intention. If you look at the scope of this project, I have hundreds of art work that was donated, it would have been impossible for me to draw everything and do all the programming myself, so when people offer their help, or their work, I tend to gladly take it without much questing. And honestly, it would be impossible to check every art work i get. This is very similar to the music company getting mad at youtube cus they claim youtube intentionally share music. I don't believe youtube intentionally steal music. It is simply impossible for youtube to check every upload they get. I too, cannot check every donation made, and I certainly did not enjoy to be stained by random person calling me a thief.

Do you expect that I should spent all my time checking every page online to see if a piece of art work is legitimate. Or do you expect that I stop taking donations all together, since I can never be certain?

To the creator of this art work, I give all my apologies for not being as careful as i should. If the mesh originally belong to someone else, please give me the original creator, I would personally explain to the creator my situation. And I will definitely give the credit where it is due. I am a good person, and I would hate to have such a small misunderstanding to create any ill feeling.

Imo, knowing a bit julius, is one of the buddies most generous I've found on the net...

maybe just use a different mesh instead....There might be some rigged mesh given away free, or get a permission of an author...

everything this guy does, has a huge percentage of generousity( *very* rare, these days... ), so...
Finally making games again!

I find it funny that it was fmxs' first post, did you post it for the sole purpose of trying to give someone a hard time for potentially stealing something?

When I saw the character I thought final fantasy too, even though more in the ways of "inspired by". And I would find it hard to believe you've ripped something off intentionally julius :)

Keep up the good work.

I didn't claim that you are using it intentionally, and I apoligise if you might have been offended by it.
I realise you can't check all content, but if someone is warning you, then please don't take it lightly.
In your case, this is a serious problem.

Please check your PM if you want more specifics regarding my claim.
(I wouldn't want to make it easier for them to detect you...)

Other than that, I hope you can find out why some of us can't run your program, and others can.

Thanks
:)

@vermeer - I don't doubt you. I would agree that what julius is doing is a very kind thing for the community, and I am thankful of that.
But 'generously' accecpting content from others may not be the smartest thing to do either...

@deesine - NO. I'm sorry that this is the way things have turned out
Maybe I will post more from now on to prove that I have more integrity than it may seem

public apology

Post by juliusctw »

hello

After going online in search of the model, I found it. Since then, i have tried to confront the contributor that gave me the mesh. No reply. I also tried to contact the original author. I couldn't find any info.

I feel pretty bad about this cus all i wanted was to create something useful for the community, and for all the good intention i had, things didn't turn out very well. I also owe fmx a public apology for being offended. After reading his post several times, I believe he was trying to protect me rather than accusing me. I will take the mesh download off the internet immediately. And now i'm not too sure about just taking random mesh that people sent me. Aye, more art work for me.

I realized that I accidentally hard coded some path into the code, That''s why if people put the program in the wrong location it won't run. I will change it, as soon as i can. Aye more programming work for me.

Don't worry about it!
I just want to see you with a successful project in the end, and its better to be aware of problems early on than later.

Like everyone else has said: "Keep up the great work!"
