If I buy a CD, I believe I am well within my rights if I use that music to generate a mix cd using one of the tracks from the original. I believe I would also be okay if I used the tracks to generate a ring tone for use by me on my personal phone.
but only if it doesn't have a copy protection, you're not allowed to use any songs from a protected CD even for your personal needs !!!
and another prety curious thing: you know all this games with a red cross on the medi packs? The "german red cross" (DRK) tried to forbit the use of this cross, too !!! They said "It's our trademark and no one else should be allowed to use it !!!"...

But I think they didn't succeed with this, but I'm not sure if the process is already finished...
and the music companies also wanted to forbit the use of their songs for ringtones, also not sure if the process is finished...
uTube or myVideo and such platforms are also in the crossfire because many people are making their own music videos with commercial songs and post them there, and AFAIK this process is still running...
so, you see all enterprises who make their money with such things are trying to hold their work for their own, even if the "burglars" don't make profit with it !!!

(please don't take the word "burglar" too serious

)
and for software this is another thing, in most EULAs (especially from MS) stands that you're not allowed to use
any part of it for any reason...
also I have to say that maybe all this can differ from country to country, I don't know...
and as a closing word: I personally don't care about this, I just wanted to mention this...
