FAPA - Free Artist Package Association

Post by Halifax »

Just a little idea I had of starting the FAPA (Free Artist Package Association) which means that people from the forum, or outside of the forum, donate free model packages, texture packages, or sound packages, billboard packages, level packages, etc. for use by the Irrlicht community. This would aid in speeding up development, and also the lack of art in some games.

It would also be best to set a standard for the release of packages so they are just strewn together and things of that sort. Only the texture package standard is in place as of now, people can suggest others ones as they come and I will update this first post, and also post whether or not they are accpeted.

* Textures must be presentable.
* You must present a description of your texture package, and a name
* Must include .rar and .zip for downloads.
* Textures should, preferably, be in .jpg or .png format..
* The more formats you allow your textures to be in for download, the better.
* Include downloads from rapidshare & mediafire, and any others you like.

So here is the first texture package, that I made myself.

Name: Road Texture Package

Description:
This is a road texture package that includes almost all the lines, and stuff you see on the roads every day, for use in a city model or something of that sort. 33 textures are included in the package.

Downloads:
RoadTextures256 (RAR)(Rapidshare)
RoadTextures512 (RAR)(Rapidshare)
RoadTextures1024 (RAR)(Rapidshare)
RoadTextures256 (ZIP)(Rapidshare)
RoadTextures512 (ZIP)(Rapidshare)
RoadTextures1024 (ZIP)(Rapidshare)
RoadTextures256 (RAR)(Mediafire)
RoadTextures512 (RAR)(Mediafire)
RoadTextures1024 (RAR)(Mediafire)
RoadTextures256 (ZIP)(Mediafire)
RoadTextures512 (ZIP)(Mediafire)
RoadTextures1024 (ZIP)(Mediafire)

My random textures and snippets: http://irrlicht.sourceforge.net/phpBB2/ ... p?p=138927

All of them are .png at 1024x1024, with normalmaps, glossmaps. You'll find most of them are concrete and bricks and dirt. Check them out.

Thanks for your contribution, I definitely like those textures.

But please could you at least try to follow a little bit of the standard? For example, the part that says provide a description of what is included and a title?

EDIT: Actually I will just download them, and make a structured pack out of them, if they aren't already.

EDIT2: Just curious, but why did you use PNG over JPG?

I stored the glossmap in the alpha channel of the diffuse texture so I don't have to load a seperate one. .png have alpha, and it has good quality, I think.

Ah, yes, that makes sense as JPG does not have an alpha channel. And yes although PNG is loseless and JPG is not, it rarely makes a difference on the quality of a big texture like 1024 textures.

I have seen problems caused by compression artifacts because of jpg's. Espically having JPG's as alpha maps.

So I tend to use PNGs, TGAs and DDS'

That and those 3 formats have alpha channels too.

Hey, this is a good idea. I've given free stuff and would like to support the idea.

How about creating a website for it? That would be good move.

I am sorry, but I don't have those resources at the current point. That was originally the plan, since Turbosquid does have many free texture packages, but I just can't.
