As for the terrain generator, I haven't got a working version at the moment, but I'm willing to put some time into that if there is enough demand for it.

yeah put some time into it please.
We're programmers. Programmers are, in their hearts, architects, and the first thing they want to do when they get to a site is to bulldoze the place flat and build something grand. We're not excited by renovation:tinkering,improving,planting flower beds.

There is libnoise which can do realistic heightmap and textures too in few lines (check the planetary example) :
