Is the Irrlicht forums slow?

Post by Mr. Moxie »

Is the Irrlicht forums slow for anyone else? Its almost at the unusable point now. Is there an off time to browse?

All the rest of the net is super fast like always.

Sorry it's so slow for me it took 5 times of "try again" to post this response.

I tried to look at your link, but got this. Hope it's an informative thread though. ;) I'll try to read it late tonight, maybe it will be better.

I tried other forums on sourceforge and they seem fine.

Yeah, the forums are so slow to the point of me not even bothering with a topic at times.

Why not just migrate the boards over to a different phpbb site?

I'll throw in my 2 cents here;

Normally the forum is fine on my work computer but for the past few days it's been terribly slow. It's not been timing out at all, just taking forever to load the pages and sometimes i get the pages just stopping, maybe because i'm opening too many tabs at the same time.

On my home computer i often get the problem where it tries to download the page instead of open it and i get lots of timing out at home too. The problems hang around for a while then go away for a while and then come back again.

It's strange i see different problems on different computers, both using firefox, so maybe it's not just down to the forums.

No, other forums and project web sites were also impacted. Since servers are always grouped alphabetically at SF one can simply test other project sites with the same initial letter (or nearby). However, note that you have to check project website, not the SF project site (Which is hosted differently) and that other projects might have moved their website away from SF. But those which did not were all very slow the last days. It's better ATM, don't know for how long.

It's fast here right now but I've sent an e-mail to SF.Net asking about those problems and they said they're upgrading some stuff and the new Marketplace is causing those lags too so that's the reason..

[offtopic]
hybrid, you said something yesterday about irrEdit and my project but I was too tired and fell asleep and I don't remember what you said, could you refresh my mind with a PM please? - Thanks.

Yeah, sometimes the it has a timed out message.. other times it just displays the URL and says done.. even though nothing is on screen... Maybe upgrading the forum to phpBB3 would help?

See sourceforge statistics, up to 100gb a month. That's close to $50 a month of hosting

It looks like the server where this forum is sitting on is swamped with too many clients.

For all we know, the machine might be spec'ed with a Celeron CPU, 512Mb of RAM and cron job acting as a sysadmin.

That's what you get when service such as this is free.

It was fine when I first started here a month ago or so, not its slow, and not functioning at points. I'm sure something is up on their server. Hopefully they'll fix it soon.

http://www.inmotionhosting.com/hostingplans.html

This is the host I use for irrlicht.spintz.com, 3demon.net, and various other website I manage. I pay for the $18.95 a month, but for $6.95 / month, you get 1.5 TBs of disk space, 15 TBs per month of bandwidth, and 2 MySQL databases (only need 1 for forums).

Sourceforge is great for the SVN hosting, but all their other services I've used are very slow and unreliable.

I'd like to provide some incentive for this move. So, if Irrlicht moves to SMF forums, and gets rid of phpBB, I'll donate the $166.80 to pay for the first 2 years of the hosting at $6.95 / month.

I can even provide my services in helping to migrate from SMF to phpBB, there are converters that do this for you, user database and all, it's very easy. I did it with Irrspintz forums, which granted were much smaller, but it'd definitely possible.

Let me know, email me if the Irrlicht team is interested, I don't check this forum very often.

EDIT: And of course you know not to have Hybrid be the one that emails me! ;)

That could be very refreshing and I'm sure everyone would like a new server to host the forums although I don't think we should leave phpBB, maybe just upgrade to phpBB3.
