Question: Some engines have Competitions for their community
Question: Some engines have Competitions for their community
Would anyone like that sort of thing around here?
Eg. the one im thinking of atm would be best, most effective and feature rich Pool Game or something, maybe make the best 1 into a demo/tutorial, or the best 4 written up for people to see how its done.
If anyone is interested in this Idea post here, I even have an example in pure C++ and a few models if we want to try it.
BTW what do you think of the Idea Nico?
Could have the best for each Competition given the Screenshot of the month, and a place in the tutorial list.

Why not, i see nothing wrong in such competition. But at this moment i won't have time to take part in it.

It's often good, but basicly depending in teh c9omunity size...
I'd rather like more, and also see it as more practical, a comunity project: Afecelis is helping c_olin3404 to the the artwork, and if I had enough free time ,I'd help both of them with characters, but I cannot.
I mean, it seems here there are people good for each section, and while most of you like to have your own project (which is great) it'd be nice to see a comunity project, that ended as a good example of what Irlicht can do
Sorry, not hijaking the thread. I meant is good both things, competitios, and comunity project. It's just that seing the latest post of c_olin3404 thread, it came to my mind, and wanted to put my input on it all.
I mean, is good competition...but u see how many projects get stuck (pliz, somebody help r2d2 with the matrix problem with md3... ) for not knowing a detail of certain area. People always tend to specialize.
In a big comunity, and with a simpler environment, (gamestudio, etc) it may be make breed competition projects everywhere, but in an smalle rcomunity, where however, luckily there are very much tallented coders (not so much artists, talented or not ) that each specialize in an area(some do everything) like physics, others ai, etc...I think the definite project would be a comunity one, not too ambitious (as that could kill any project: I've seen so many times, it's always so) made by the comunity, not very big but grow-able, mainly to show Irrlicht power.
Somewhat that indeed is competition, as usually each one wants to excell in his area (and often, several in same area contribute; competition becomes also colllaboration)
I dunno, but if it'd reach a good point, it'd be something to be proud of at the end...
Just an idea, and sorry if it sounds as a bit of hijaking. Anyway, I think cometition is also good. Variety is richness

We have had a contest. The Winter 2003 one that I sponsored.
There really isn't enough people to host a contest like the one you specify to be so precise.
No many people want to make a pool only game, that's why the Winter 2003 demo was just "Use as many features in Irrlicht as you can."

Crud, how do I do this again?
A community effort to create something to show users the full extent of Irrlicht would be interesting. Whether people would be prepared to stop work on their own project for a couple of weeks is debatable. I'd probably help where I can as long as it isn't an FPS ( there's so many already )
On a pool game issue, I think it is more an issue of physics than the graphics engine. It would publicise a physics engine ( and show a bias IMO ) rather than Irrlicht.

I'd really like if you all start a comunity "street fighter II "(no, not same characters, same story...just same type of game) but in 3d.
I say this knowing it wont do. Is even rare someone does like these type of games, not to mention the whole comunity...
In 3 weeks I'll be more free, but happens something so important, that I don't know if I'll be up to collaborate... If i am, anyway, will be with small bits (comunity project is good for this: ppl find easier to help with a bit than do full game art or code for other one only person...)
With the idea of doing something "demo-like" not falling in the trap of being pointlessly ambitious, as those things never get finished, while a demo(small game) use to be quite satisfactory for all.
I also like medieval RPGs, but the fact is everybody thinks that those are tioo huge to make even by 5 ppl, and not to mention done as a comunity small project...no way... A medieval interactive demo, maybe, not much more, hehe.
Anyway, I am not to be taken in account. is just an idea for those with the energy to do it now...

the problem I see, is basicly you'll fnd it hard to find an artist for a single game.Even more; an artist to fully dedicate to a game... that's why I think it may end more successful a single comunity project, to show Irlicht capabilities, and besides, to make something more complete.
That's not I mean a competition is bad (though in a team project people also get like urged to do things with quality) is just, playing solo having to do all stuff, code and art...
And also, it'd be nice to see all the skills in here put together (some are good at AI, some at physics, some at level editing..etc)
but was some kind of paralell idea...

Reason I was looking at the pool Idea is...
Id love to see what a pure Irrlicht Project version of a pool game would look compared to this one I found on the web a while back, I cant remember which site sadly , but ive put it online here.
http://shell.world-net.co.nz/~washi/src_code/3dpool.zip
Have a look and tell me what you think, I know its not an often made thing, but atleast it will show:
x model loading
Irrlicht's collision detection
and depending on how far someone goes all manner of other things
An Irrlicht version could even be shown against that version to compare and show how good Irrlicht is.
BTW: I saw that contest thats what i mean and I dont mean to take anything away from it saigumi, but since im just a poor Computer Technician, and Early on Programmer (I used to program 10 years ago, but thats too long away from it) I cant afford to do prizes, but making a tutorial out of it could be interesting, the same way the balls interact would be similar to how cars react when hit, for those car game people, similar in ways for ricochet in shooting games etc.
