This reminds me of one of the most famous aphorisms, "A jack of all trades, is a master of none."dejai wrote:Well its sort of hard not to come of arrogant, when you read my post and it had no effect at all on you. If you know C++, Java, VB, MySQL, PHP thats all good but it just means 1 thing. You either are not fluent in all the languages or you are but you don't know how to use the language. Syntax is all well and good by semantics is just as important if not more important.
Lost in a world with 3D graphics.

you guy are all kinda rude, if he is familiar with what he needs to be to get the networking done properly, then the hard learning part i done with.
transferring a text game into a 3d game isnt that hard, since in an 3d mmorpg is basically just displaying the text information in a different way (using three dimensional models positioned and rotated instead of just printing the text) so i dont understand what your mocking.

Personally i think going from text to 2D would be enough work, but making the jump straight to 3D is a large amount of work... There's still a huge amount of artwork to do (models and textures etc) for an MMORPG and not knowing how to do all this means he's got to learn it as he goes so will take even longer than for someone experienced in it.
3D graphics isn't a trivial subject and not something you can learn in a day, or even a week or month probably. And that's just from the programming side, the modelling side is a whole other skill to have and most people choose either programming or modelling and get good at one, it's fairly uncommon to have someone who's really good at both!

I have seen the opposite on several persons after this thirty something(let's not be accurate) life. And I will not start my self-praising... Is not common, but happens. Leonardo was not the only one.Halifax wrote: This reminds me of one of the most famous aphorisms, "A jack of all trades, is a master of none."
A case that comes fast to mind, probably more elegant to talk about than my self, is a very friend of mine which earns his life very well as game musician, as well as game programmer.
Anyway, sometimes to do a task, you need to be good at it, maybe no need to become a master. And anyway, is not very easy to be "the best in da world ever" in something. Too many ppl. Not that there's real need or sense in that...In my case, it just happens... (a bit of humor)
I know he wont get my skills in modeling in two months (mwahaha) but i also have met "kids" extremely capable in my life. And putting them the needed material to evolve, is all they need. Even if they never do a game, let alone a MORPG. But in the way, they could get nice skills in some programming and handling Blender : that one is not an impossible task. But is *not* an easy 3d package. Is just the free and open source once , of reference. That's why I emphasized, -leaving very apart the matter of he ever will do a game or not- that Blender got to be studied dedicating one self seriously to it. Unless have done already with some major comercial package.
Doing your self even a pong, if well polished, is a hell of work, even. I mean, also in artwork.
Finally making games again!

To be absolutely clear, my issue is with the expectation that starting to learn 3D graphics will allow you to even begin to produce a 3D MMORPG within any realistic time frame.
While I do actually agree that the 3D part is not the most technically challenging aspect of an MMORPG, and that all journeys start with the first step, the sheer volume of high quality - i.e. not "my_first_knob_goblin.x"- content that's required to create and sustain a MMORPG beggars belief.
A post just asking where to start with 3D modelling and programming, fine, great, no problem. A post that begins with "I R 1337" and then goes on to boast about previous experience completing a MMORPGs - which has apparently already been abandoned, i.e. he's bailed on his userbase - eh, do me a favour. Put it back in your pants. Nobody wants to see that thing waving about.

I appreciate those who are backing up what I am trying to do.
But those of hate: Instead of wasting your time doubting what I am and am not capable of, why not instead just post the material asked for or not say anything at all because nothing any of you are saying is stopping me from doing this lol.
I have a goal, and therefore I will accomplish it. Simple as that. No more arguments. If there was only the material I needed in this then it would merely be 10 posts long instead of 35.
Again, thanks to everyone that understand where I am coming from.

The future is coming on.
No one here is posting things of hate, they're just trying to give you constructive criticism and you're just fighting back against it. Obviously you feel prepared because you've done lots of text based MMORPGs but this wasn't clear to people in the beginning and even then it doesn't change a lot of the advice being given.
The modelling tools have been suggested to you, and i think that's basically all you wanted to know wasn't it?

My notation in respect to dejai's post was just a simple, well known, aphorism that I felt like reiterating. I don't see my actions as rude, in any interpretation.
Knowing languages is one thing, but knowing libraries, and implementation, is another.

First off their are some misconceptions in that. You can script characters in Irrlicht because it is a graphics engine. At any rate, here should be almost everything you need:Someone direct me to some fine tutorials and to which program I need to use to create some ill characters that are able to be scripted and animated through irrlicht!
