Adventures with Blender for Ships and Giggles. (PG Title)

Post by dejai »

I have never really been into modeling, or animating. I would love to be able to model or animate but I am really not that good, well I am not bad its just I don't find it extremely interesting. After I make anything I always think to myself.. At what cost.. How much horrible code could I have produced in the same period of time. But for once I decided I would take on blender for it would be our first and possibly final battle.

I clicked the blender.exe icon and bam I was confronted with a grey screen that look way to overcomplicated I had absolutely no idea what to do.. I left clicked on what looked like a box? It didn't do anything, I left clicked and I was getting somewhere.. I decided to just go crazy, and after I found the Alt key, the Shift +s + size key I was set. And this is what I came up with.

I a, such a noob I don't know how to export renders to picture file types so I had to take a screen shot and edit it :/

Anyway I like blender now, it makes a lot of sense you just have to understand how it works. Its really quite fun to play around with. I don't know if I can export the grass to irrlicht.. I am still completely lost at how to lightmap in blender. I don't really know what UVMapping or baking is. Any help with the terminology would be great. Tell me what you think about my first real attempt at blender..

Hey thats pretty neat. I don't think the grass will look as good in Irrlicht. Because you would need that lighting on the top part to be able to distinguish the grass blades. Maybe a lightmap like you mentioned would help, but I think the light is view dependent (So needs to be calculated dynamically). Also I would recommend a vertex shader to animate the top parts, just a basic sin curve dependent on Y position I guess.

Cheers

Yeah, I agree that is pretty cool. I like the second picture more, it reminds me of the Halo 3 trailer.

Wow, your kind of overusing that Sparta smiley aren't you. And alright, if you want to take a stab at it, then go ahead. The design document should be enough for you, I think. (Just use your imagination, but the triangle count must be below 100,000.)
