Turn Based Grid System

Post by JohnnyBread »

Hello, I'm fairly new to C++ and have never used the Irrlicht engine. I would like to start though. I was wondering if the Irrlicht engine could be used to create a turn based 'grid' type game (think x-com).

Thanks

I am doing exactly that with 2080, check out the source code. Hopefully it can help you. Maybe you'd like to help out? I am using X-Com as the model for the tactical section, stuff like destructable terrain etc.

@JohnnyBread
It's definetly suitable for such a game. I'm currently working on Laser Squac remake.

@Tyn
Have you seen Silent Sotrm ? Game is greate and terrain (walls, roofs, etc) destruction system is awesome. I just want to know how they did it. Probably by dynamically changing the mesh.

There's more than one way to skin that cat. The way I am using is having each wall be a 1mx1m block and if a shot hits the wall then it is removed and replaced by a destroyed model. There are other was but this is by far the quickest. It also makes pathfinding a lot less of a headache.

I haven't actually played Silent Storm, I may take a look at it.

Yes, it's easy, but results aren't good (visualy). And you should definitly try Silent Strom.

If you have good models then wall blocks can be pulled off. I think my buildings look OK and I have a decent destroyed model that doesn't look too bad.

Oh yes, I will be having the fully destructable buildings just like in Apoc. The floating building thing in the first two was really annoying :)

I used to kill all the citizens so they didn't get in the way, lol. The score barely goes down and it stops those bloody Chryssilid things turning them.

As soon as I can. It's the next thing on my priority list, first I have to try to get my map editor at least in a semi working state and then I will make a semi-new release ( lets just call it 0.0.3.5 ). If the map editor progresses somewhat I will package that along with it. I hope to get this finished by Sunday, this week.
