Why does google love Irrlicht so much?

Post by BlindSide »

Throughout my countless google searching escapades, I became more and more surprised at the google ranking goldmine the Irrlicht website is (including this forum).

Take these searchs which are only somewhat related to the Irrlicht engine, the results are quite surprising:

- zlib: Irrlicht is 10th place, on the very first page.
- engine: Irrlicht is number 4! This is just engine, it could be from an automobile, etc.

Ok I gotta run, feel free to share any other Irrlicht google triumphs you have encountered.

PS: Yes I have considered the possibility that google is gauging it's results based on the websites I frequent etc. I will try the same search in several different places to test if this is the case.

4th for 'engine' search? Ruddy hell.........

I suppose zlib might not be too much of a surprise as it gets mentioned a fair bit around here and is probably all over the main website, but engine is incredible!

EDIT: i just did a google search for engine and irrlicht didn't come up at all in the top few, so maybe it is to do with the website you frequent... but then that's a silly way to do a search engine because if the websites you frequent were good for what you were searching for you wouldn't be searching in the first place! Rather the engine should find you some websites you've never seen before!

"Engine" was 11th for me. The more people that link to it the higher it gets, because irrlicht is one of the better engines it's top on the search list.

Google has a no evil policy, and they don't remember your searches to customize future finds. They do however differ from country to country. Google.co.nz will be different to .com (and REALLY different to .cn :P)

Strangely 'game engine' was the same as 'engine', which I find weird

This is dissapointing, I just searched from home (As opposed to the university campus), and Irrlicht barely showed up for engine at all. Now I'm curious why google would show different things depending on the location and time of day :P

Just tried "engine" on google.de. The irrlich engine did not show up on the first page as a result, but "Irrlicht engine" was provided as a proposal for another search.
