Models (Buildings, cars etc.)

Post by kingdutch »

I'm not sure if this is the right place but here goes:

I'm currently working on a little game, it'll be set in a city however since I'm a programmer and not a modeller (Really I can't make anything in blender or w/e  ) I've been googling for some free 3D models. Turns out it's quite hard to find. So my question to you: where do you get your 3D models, do you make them yourself, or what sites do you get them off?

turbosquid is a good place for free models though a lot of them have been made by amatuer modellers who have done awesome models but have only managed to achieve it in a huge number of polys so they're completely useless for games.

if you go on my website (link in my profile) i have a page with some useful websites for getting game resources, might be some more model stuff there.

another option is to just use really basic models so that you can get your game working properly and then if you've got it working well you may get interest from a modeller who can make better versions of the models for you.

for buildings you can just use a cube scene node and apply a simple texture to it depicting a building, plenty of those can be found by google.

That was my idea ^.^ but I've not been able to find/create those "Really basic models" as I said, I'm having trouble creating and saving a cube in the right format with blender

Yep, but I was thinking of being able to make access in there, and that'll require some more puzzling with doors etc. (Or just do the GTA way, create a little colored triangle pointing down and when you go over it, enter the block)

I had the same problem with all those greate modellers (like blender), but then I found Wings3D (http://www.wings3d.com/), and after some time (not that much) to get into it I do my modelling with that. Still only simple models, but I can get my ideas working.

Ok I'll check Wings 3D out, and in the meantime, I'll just rez some cubes, color them and write down what's what, but another problem I have is I want to make dynamic maps, allow users to place things here and there etc.

Another good 3d modeling program is Anim8or. It is easy to use and there is a lot of documentation and tutorials. Plus Anim8or files easily export into a lot of other formats.

I think best option for you is to find some artist/modeler which would want to work on your project. You can try some internet forums dedicated to 3Dart.
