Introduction

Post by LR01 »

Hello IrrLicht Community,

I'm LR01, well that is my nick of course.
I've modeling for some time now, I started with modeling for a quite unknown game, C&C Renegade, which I'm still modeling a bit for.
(it's a modification called: "Command & Conquer Battle for Dune", http://www.battlefordune.co.uk/ )
I've lately taken interest to go further, so I went looking for a engine and the IrrLicht engine is the best I can find so far. Now, I'm modeler as I said so I know know how to code ore program, so I'm not alone here. I have friend who can do the coding and maybe some more people.

Anyway just wanted to say hello since this is probably the engine we will design a game on. What the game will be, we don't know yet but that will come in time.

So you might see me around here.

I was just thinking the other day it would be cool to have a new Dune game! Just been reading Children of Dune!

So this is a non-commericial project? Or commercial but not being done by a proper company, just like an indie project? Is this what you'd want to be using Irrlicht for or is Irrlicht just for some side projects?

Heh, anything for a well made dune game. I loved the first one since it used a lot from the books. I also loved a lot Dune 2 and Dune 2000 as the gameplay was nice and acting wasn't too bad. But the most recent one is... beuark. It's a nice game, don't get me wrong, just doesn't have a Dune feel at all.

the best i mean is having the most positive qualities over other 3d graphics engine out there(filesize, render time, etc).

Steady on, old fruit: it's a valid question. Unless you know what you want from an engine, it's hard to evaluate how good it is for your purpose.

sounded like they had decided that irrlicht was the best for the project already (hence not seeing this post on another forum). My point was to stay on focus and not bring personal whining in the thread (as is tradition it seems).
What the game will be, we don't know yet but that will come in time.
any ideas on genre or style? or what kind of time frame maybe?

Not at all a petty argument FuzzY... the "best" engine is competely subjective to it's application. In no way am I suggesting Irrlicht is some super duper engine better than any other but rather that there's no point finding a 3D engine (or any other engine/library for that matter) and then feeling the need to use it on every project you ever take on. Choosing an engine/library should depend competely on it's suitability for the project at hand and not so much whether it gives better
filesize,render time,etc
over another.
sounded like they had decided that irrlicht was the best for the project already
You then go to quote that they don't know what game they are doing yet.

That is a indie project,

for the irrlicht engine project, we are still discussing the concept of the game
