Icon adding after compilation

hi,
Its a fact that free visual c++ compiler 2003 and the express editions lacks the resource compiler.I think app without an icon is just not good. Is there any safety way of adding an icon to compiled app...once i tried resource hacker but gave me a non functional app. What can be a general solution to this situation.....????

Most resources hacker will simply replace the icon in the app, so if you have none...
