Well, if you have Windows installed right now, then you could check with your system manager. I don't know about Linux. But if you know what processor you have, and you know it's 64-bit, then you can use 64-bit operating systems.

What's your CPU?
Just google [your cpu] + 64bit and it should come up.

if you have a core 2 duo, all of them are 64 bit

Im 100% sure,
"The Core 2 brand refers to a range of Intel's consumer 64-bit single- and dual-core..."-wikipedia
plus, i bought my computer with vista 32-bit, and i just dual booted it with windows 7, 64-bit, so im sure it works

And while we're on the subject, does using a 64-bit OS has difference in matters of performance? Do you actually feel the difference on 64-bit OS or is it just another version of the OS..?

It will allow you to use more RAM, which in turn will allow more speed with games and 3D applications that use a lot of RAM.

Quote from PC World:
It's true a 64-bit desktop computer won't make your word processing program run faster (sorry, you're the bottleneck in that equation). But a 64-bit chip has the power to dramatically improve the performance of your more demanding applications, such as audio and video encoding, complex engineering programs like CAD, and--of course--games. And in the long term, 64-bit computing will give programmers much more power to play with, and could revolutionize what desktop software can do.

more ram in XP, vista has different RAM storage.

64-bit isn't really supported by many drivers on XP, i don't know for vista.

Dual core allways 64? I have a quad and i'm sure its 32bit

Most 64bit apps are slower than their 32bit counterparts. The problem is cache - much data will occupy double the size in 64bit machines (because they use 64bit adresses), so caches will fill up faster and more data has to be pushed on the stack. So if you don't need 4GB or RAM or 64bit environment for some special apps you're better off with 32bit OSes.

You can use a 64-bit processor with a 32-bit Operating System, if that was your question. Your quad is 64-bit.

dual core isn't always 64-bit (im assuming that there are some 32 bit dual cores), but the brand name "core 2" will always be 64 bit, sorry for that confusion.
