Most probably really a begynner question...but how is that possible - make the faces look smooth?

To make a mesh smooth it should have more number of polygons. A low polymesh will be seen as blocky while highpoly ones are more detailed.
Smoothness can be imparted by slightly adjusting the normals. This can be done in 3ds max, in editable poly or mesh mode.

choose file format that supports vertex normal. makes alot of difference!

You could use normal mapping too or there could be a function in IMeshManipulator which can smooth out the normals for you which could improve the smoothness a bit more.

However, those effect can only be seen if the node is lit. If you don't have lights in your scene you habe to go high-poly or bake the details into textures (which can be very impressive if the camera angle is not user controllable).
