Windows 7

As long as my XP works and most of the applications do, I have no reason to switch to Windows 7 or Vista even.

you may or may not switch, but anything you develop to run on XP might inevatebly end up in the hands of a user with the new Windows7 OS (although I'm pretty happy with XP myself).

Vista seemed to handle Irrlicht pretty well (OGL support was rather problematic IIRC) so it'll be good to be aware of how things might change in Windows7

A long time yet before we'll need to worry about it though :P

It seems according to the microsoft page like it will only work if you have vista already installed. And I don't want Vista. What I want to do is dual boot XP and windows 7.
That would be illogical captain...

Nonsense. I created a blank virtual machine and installed Seven on it without any problems.

i don't think you need vista to install it... when i installed it on mine, it gave an option of upgrade (from vista) or full installation, which is what i did, and it works fine. Although i did find a bug that won't let me type anything into a search box, it seems to run much better than vista. None of those
1. delete file
2. vista asks for confirmation
3. vista asks for permission
4. permission denied error
5 goto number 3 and repeat indefinitely

so, i have high hopes for it.

also, if you would like me to test an app on 64 bit win7, just ask me, i would be glad too.

They're saying that you shouldn't install it on your primary PC. But if I dual boot are the risks the same? I mean, will it harm XP?

I am dual-booting vista and windows 7. Im pretty sure windows 7 will do no harm to other partitions, and from what i have experienced, it seems pretty stable, so you should be safe.

First of all, you don't JUST need Vista to install it. You can only upgrade from Vista. Meaning, if you have XP, you have to do the clean install option.

Its virtually bug less and I use it as my main OS on my development computer, after seeing the beauty and power of Windows 7, I trust it with all my work documents on here. I would never doubt the stability of this release. Its a best for Windows in my opinion!

Yes it's really nice but there a 2 things I find very annoying:

The new taskbar...
And I miss the option to change the start menu and the control panel back to the classic views like in XP and Vista.

it is definitely better than vista in my opinion.. except for the one bug i found. Any text box, that searches for documents, while you type it in, crashed explorer.exe for me... but after the last update, it seems to have been fixed. other than that, it seems very stable, and awesome :D

I installed windows 7 on a seperate computer.
It's way better than vista. But we will see in a few months how well it really works.

The test computer only have 1gb ram but it seems to run fine.
Having problems with the sound though and i've had 2 major crashes.

Hmm, Win7 is certainly much better than Viśta, but I prefer old, good XP.
Win7 have too much effects/fireworks and all this stuff. My eyes are bleeding after working some hours under this OS.
