Marble Blowout - WIP(Introducing Mayan Theme)

Post by rrg »

Marble Blowout is a freeware game that i been working on. It's one of those classic games where you roll a ball to the end of the level. In this game you will collect crystals scattered around the level. If you collect all the crystals you will unlock a new ball. Some balls that you unlock are special and certain levels require these balls to access different parts of the level. There are different themes such as Western or Mayan. The video show the Western Theme. This game uses Newton Game Dynamics for physics. Hope you like it.

Video 3 New(3/28/09)http://video.yahoo.com/watch/4847640/12928050

This video introduces the Mayan Theme. Also you may have notice that the crystal are now shiny and some sounds in the game are different. For example the crystal sound has a better sound then previous videos. Also you can see the how the physics engine is going to be used in this game. Hope you enjoy the video.

This video show the spooky theme and also a closer look at the physics that the game is using.(Newton Game Dynamics). The video also show the special balls that can be unlocked. There is the small ball category and the pinball category. Each category will have different types of balls. So for pinball category there will be a bunch of pinballs that can be played with, but first you need to be unlock them. Note some sound effects are still bad, haven't found the right sounds yet.

Video 1 http://video.yahoo.com/watch/4847503/12927798
This video show the game play of Marble Blowout. It is the first level of the game and is just a quick preview of the Western Theme. This video does not reflect what the final game will look like just an idea. The sound is temporary (just to see if collision is working in the level. For example the crystal sound is a horrible click sound. Don't be discourage the sounds will be better in the final game) and there is no music.

That's looking like a nice clean implementation, congratulations and good luck with it.

I've sure there's another similar sort of game made with Newton?
But your game seems to have a lot more soul to it, which is a good thing.

Does the user change the camera-view or was it changing itself? Maybe you should make it a smooth view transition because it feels a little too abrupt (possibly use the mouse to track the view around the ball too?)

But its looking great so far, keep it up

Thanks for the comments so far.

Right now the camera is changed by the user you can also zoom in and out. Its a good idea to do a smooth transition, I'll look into that and see if i can figure out how to program it.

Marble madness reminds me of a game i played on the very first Nintendo. I don't know if it was called marble madness but it was a hard game.

I love these types of games! I with you the best of luck and hope you release a demo soon!

My only recomentdation would be to make everything more organic, make the balls bounce a bit more and perhaps make the level tilt a bit in the direction the ball is rolling to make it feel more alive. (The tilting doesn't actually have to effect the movement, just a way of showing speed.)

Also, I saw your bloopers on Video 3 (I think) and I might recomend to rely less on the physics engine to ensure stuff like that gets done peoperly and smoothly. Even when nothing went wrong, the block getting pushed down by the ball and falling down the hole was a little jerky.

thanks for your comment DtD. You have some great ideas. I will try to work on the tilt, also i will smooth out the physics so it wont be so jerky.
