How about a quick tour of the documentation? You should start here. Then, given that, you'd probably want to look at this. Once you have the mouse position, you'd generate a wide character string, possibly using this. Finally, you'd set the text of the static text element using this.

To answer your second question, the correct solution is to upgrade.
