My projects models.

Post by wildrj »

Alright so im at the most annoying part of game programming the graphics..Well i hate 3d modeling but.. my models don't come out half bad. Since im going to need a large amount of models i decided why not share what i make with the community :). I'm not to fond of using other peoples models so i decided im going to make them all. So has i make them i will be posting them in this thread for others to use. These may seem a bit high poly but im sure whatever modeling app you guys decide to import them into will have some way to depoly them. I will be releasing all models in .blend files for those who like to use blender :P

For security sake lets just say these models are under zlib. Use has you want i don't care.. don't need to mention me etc.

A package is a zip archive containing a .obj that's uv mapped and a blank texture. Simply color texture and apply to .obj. The blank texture is a basically a outline of what needs to be colored like a coloring book .. just color in between the lines and your good :)

Jesus tap-dancing christ.... How many polys are in that syringe?? A tad too many I'd say!

JP's right. It's unwise to have such a huge amount of poly in a prop model.

Yeah with that many polys that syringe can pass for a space station.

That's good!

Anybody heard of baking? wildrj do you have UV's defined in thoses models? I don't see surface smoothing applied...

Lol forgive me for having them so high poly  Im not exactly what you call a "good" modeler. How many polys would you say is good..

Also baking? Sorry im pretty much below amateur in this department. I really dont understand how you can get the smooth look without more polys..

By baking Christian probably means creating normal maps from high poly models and then applying that normal map to a much lower poly version so that it effectively looks identical but renders much much quicker.

If your syringe is just a prop in your scene, i.e. something lying on your table then you really wouldn't want to use anywhere near that number of polys. How many is it? I can see that the point of the syringe has certainly got a lot more polys than are necessary.

Ah yes, it would appear that you are falling into the common pitfall that many new modelers do. The look changes dramatically once you texture your models, thus reducing the look of roughness very significantly. Normal maps can help as well, but that's probably a little bit beyond what you want to try to do.

Here's a little bit of proof: Unreal Tournament 3 4096x2304 image. Zoom in and check the helmet of the person on the left. It's easy to pick out the polygons that you wouldn't be able to in a lower resolution or while playing that game, etc.

How about enabling the smooth look in blender for your objects so you get a feeling how it looks with normals. What you enabled is the solid state. To enable smooth for an object activate the appropriate one, go into edit mode in your buttons panel and click the button "Set Smooth" !

I didnt found the english version but will help you to find the appropriate window: http://de.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_Do ... %C3%A4tten

Alright so these models are a little less complex but i needed them for the scene. I will be forcing myself to pump out at least 5 models a day. If any of you have textures that place nicely on these models please share!

Well guys i just want to apologize for anyone who was expecting 5 new models. After talking to bitplane on irc he explained how uv mapping and how texturing worked. So now that i know how to do uv mapping i plan on releasing the .blend files and a .zip containing a packaged obj + blank texture file that can easily be used.

To save other people trouble of texturing / uv mapping them. Now also please keep in mind that when i modeled the first 9 models.. i had no thought of uv mapping them  So the uv maps may seem a bit strange but i assure you. you can figure them out with just a little bit of playing around.

Alright so first some changes:
Remodeled Flashlight
Remodeled BasicJar
Added UV to BasicTopLight1
New Package Flashlight
New Package BasicJar
New Package BasicTopLight1
New Model BasicSurgicalTable2

If you need any free textures then check out my website and there's a list of some good websites that provide them!
