Places to find freely modifyable character models?

I'm starting to do work on a few characters for my game (it's gonna be realistic). And I found DAZ studio is free, and they have alot of free base characters. The problem is, all the characters seem to have an awfull lot of polys for use in games. Are there any good places to get base models to use for free, Turbo squid won't let you modify there's so that won't work.
