[Help Wanted] programmer wanted for game idea

Post by Zenchuck »

Hi all,

I am looking for a decent programmer to help with a game idea I've been kicking around.

The idea is a game where players combat to the death in an arena. When a player is killed he has to start over - the victor gains some experience and moves on to the next battle.

I want the characters to be fully customizable - where you can use sliders to manipulate the features of a character.

I have no programming skill so I will be relying on someone else for that. My skill is with ideas and art - I'll take care of the game assets and direction of the game.

This will be a multiplayer game so someone with network experience will be required - preferably near the start of the project. It would be nice to get some kind of server client system set up right away. There will only be two clients in the arena at one time - but the main program will be a lobby where players can chat, taunt each other - and challenge for a fight to the death :)

send me a pm if you are interested

Hey, please read the announcement rules (better do this twice) and also think about how you just asked for someone to work with you: You say you're an artist and don't show any of your prior art. You say you can develop ideas and the only things you show here is two sentences blabla about a usual game. Seriously, this is one of the worst help seeking threads ever.

What I liked the most:
>It would be nice to get some kind of server client system set up right away

Anyway, a good idea would probably be to tell a bit more about your idea.
Will it be in the future (with lazer pistols), nowadays (with rap-insults), in the sixties (with motor-saw chains) or in the 12:th century (with, of course, magic spells) ?

And yes, showing off your artistic talents would really help too. Definitely.

 yeah, pretty unrealistic...

You can see some of my art if you click on my signature.

I'm thinking more roman gladiator - turn based and tiled - but with 3d third person view - similar to the first fallout.

your art is awesome, if you'd have put it in the first post you'd get nothing but positive responses I'm sure..

I second xDan ;)

BTW nice idea though, you can actually do that kind of game with PHP/MySQL without too much hassle (well, compared to C++ / sockets anyway).

 I suppose you could make it web-based, but there's obviously things you can do in Irrlicht that you can't with PHP. Sockets aren't that evil once you're used to them. :P

So, basically you want to make yet another Super Smash Bros remake with play customization? No offcence, but that is what I'm reading right now.

Usual standard tip for people who want to start a project, without paying people, are alone and can only offer one of the aspect of game creation:
Join an existing project!
Seriously, enough group are stuck missing a coder, artist, sound guy, etc. without everyone with an idea starting a new project. If your idea can make people drop what they're doing without you asking them, invest money in you, then maybe, just maybe, you've got a winner idea. Also, pretty much everyone has ideas. A good game designer has more than a dozen practical one a week and nearly none of those will ever see the light of day.

Good luck still with whichever endeavor you choose to pursue. And yeah, correct your first post so that it meets the project posting requirements ^^

problem with Zenchuck is he leaves the team without notification....
We're programmers. Programmers are, in their hearts, architects, and the first thing they want to do when they get to a site is to bulldoze the place flat and build something grand. We're not excited by renovation:tinkering, improving, planting flower beds.

I'm going to work on the project this weekend - I hope to have something more substantial next week.

Thanks to everyone for their advice.

Well, it has been a month - instead of going ahead with my own game I have decided to help out an independent developer.

Here is the first character I have made. 712 triangles with sword and shield. Everything was done in Blender and Gimp - hooray!

I would still like to partner with a good programmer and make my own game some day.

the model looks ok, but the animation is a little stiff. try to make the character to have more up-and-down when running. and also try not to make the arms and legs to have the exact timing altogether otherwise it will look kinda robotic. just my 2 cents. 8)

I agree, it needs some up and down movement, but it looks good overall.
