Download the live-cd's (or dvd's). Then you can take a look at them before you have to install anything.

I'd say Kubuntu(or Ubuntu, whichever you prefer)
But everyone has a different taste

Do you like KDE or GNOME? The "best" distribution is very subjective here. It depends on personal tastes. If you were to ask a large variety of GNOME users what their favorite distribution would be, I would think they would say Ubuntu. Likewise for KDE users, I would think it would be OpenSUSE or Kubuntu.

You should download an Ubuntu Live CD and an OpenSUSE KDE Live CD. You can see what desktop system you like best, Ubuntu or KDE, and what distribution you like best, *buntu or OpenSUSE. Both distributions have GNOME and KDE versions available.

well having used ubuntu , kubuntu and opensuse i would have to say my favourite is , linux mint. it is a distro based of ubuntu. so anything on ubuntu works on linux mint. it is probably the best default choice for new people to linux. ( it is a gnome desktop variant of linux although there are kde and lxde variants)

I've tried various linux distros for about 3 years now, what i can recommend you is Linux Mint with Gnome or Xubuntu(Ubuntu + XFCE - what i am using now). Don't touch KDE4 just yet, especially if you are new to linux, although it's my favourite desktop environment and has alot of features it tends to brake alot.

But don't let me stop you, try all the distros, eventually you will find the one you like the most (or as many do, switch back to windows if you don't like any of them

).

If you are asking this question I'll assume you have never installed Gnu/Linux or used it much... so install Ubuntu (or Linux Mint, a derivative of Ubuntu).

If you like using Gnu/Linux after a while you might try experimenting with a few distros to see what style of package management and desktop environment you like the best. It really depends what kind of user you are.

Installed Ubuntu 10.04 and I must say I quite like it, next up I'll try Linux Mint With Xubuntu.

ps: I'm mainly doing this, because I find running Windows 7 on everything just silly.

keep in mind , Kubuntu ( ubuntu's kde alternative) and linux mint kde variant are not the "official" distro. they are community developed variants and as such i have experienced that they are not as stable and sometimes lack some features of the default version of the distro.
( i'm not talking kde and gnome specific features btw, which are a given for differences)
if you are on gnome i would recommend the elementary theme ( you can google how to add their ppa (repository) and install their theme and also the docky system , elementary is just a real professional looking theme that resembles MAC and well , docky is just eye candy

although sometimes handy)

Kubuntu is Ubuntu's KDE alternative, Xubuntu is the Ubuntu low-spec version.

sorry you're right. lol so silly ( shoud remember to read over my post once more before posting) . xubuntu is using xfce i think, which is as you say the low spec version, for lower spec pc's or for those that don't care at all about eye candy and just want more performance from their machine.
i didn't download the full xubuntu distro although i did download the desktop
( in ubuntu you can download kubuntu desktop and xubuntu desktop and vice-versa and you can switch between kubuntu ,xubuntu and vanilla ubuntu at the login screen)
It didn't appeal to me very much, i'm more of a gnome person , i find it alot more stable, although kde can be a very beautiful desktop.

I never did get this working... Do you know of any guides that would help setting this up?

It's awesome, I used it for some years.
Mint is based on Ubuntu, but is more automated and have more GUI configurators, more hardware working without installing/configuring anything.
It's good if you want to have working system, but not for learning GNU/Linux more deeply (bigger mess in /etc/ i never seen).

I have OpenSUSE and Irrlicht work well in it ( I have the drivers installed succesful ), I recomend it, but if you are a new penguin, use an Ubuntu ok Kubuntu distro, it's very easy to use
