Hmm... I think more dangerous is programmer who think is electrician, not just only who have soldering iron in hands.
I remember when bought my first multimeter some months ago and wanted to test it... so i put it in socket in my house... (European, 220V)...

What I learnt back in my first practical semester - was a electronics noob back then (and still am - don't use a phone jack to grab power. Or you'll end up with a short-circuit. But my boss told me to use this jack, so I soldered around (remember ... noob) and got the adapter working - the cheap power supply of the test computer stopped working after it was plugged in however
