reflection help please =*(

I'm having so much trouble getting a good solution for reflection working well on 1.7.1. The examples from the past either don't work or the ones that do work distorts my UI. I need something that I can use to put gloss on floors and counters and put reflection on mirrors and have the amount of refraction be adjusted. Can someone please help?
