NVidia GTX 480

Post by nathanf534 »

I just recently obtained an NVidia GTX 480 for free, and am wondering what is required to run it. Other than a power supply with enough power (I think they say 600W minimum) do you know of any special requirements the computer/motherboard needs to run it? I only own a laptop, but I might be able to get a 2-4 year old desktop for free, so I want to know if that will be able to run it (not sure of the specs yet, but it probably has an integrated graphics card), I don't really want to spend any money on this.

make sure that you have a pci-e slot, pending which kind of video card you got. Just make sure the mother board has a matching slot and you are good to go. there are also different pci-e slots, it is prolly pci-e 2.0. google should be able to get all the specs you need to determine your slot and what slot is required for the video card.

So basically as long as it fits in the motherboard, it should run? It doesn't matter if the motherboard has an integrated graphics card?

Correct. Just about every motherboard has on board integrated graphics. Adding a video card simply disables on board and uses external. You may need a specific power supply pin (some are 6 pin) for it, though I am not sure they do that any more. Check and see if it needs its own power connection and make sure the power supply has one or you can get a converter to it.
