Making Irrlicht's GUI more attractive

Post by axeves »

Yeah, i need help with making irrlicht's gui more of an eyepleaser, because, to be honest, irrlicht's gui looks like it's from 1997, and is not really going to fit in any modern kind of game, atleast not if there isn't any way to customize it.

So, to the question, how do i change irrlicht's gui? Do i have to change things inside irrlicht's code filled guts and rebuild the whole thing or is there a simple way to just change the textures and icons of the gui?

Just create your own IGUISkin to customize the rendering of the gui.
We're programmers. Programmers are, in their hearts, architects, and the first thing they want to do when they get to a site is to bulldoze the place flat and build something grand. We're not excited by renovation:tinkering, improving, planting flower beds.

Don't use the GUI at all. Render GUI elements directly in 3D on top of your 3D scene. You get better integration and a great look.

@mongoose7 - then you have to write your own gui from scratch for typical elements. Can certainly always be done - but often easier to start with something that works.

But basically 2 solutions already given, a third one is that some elements also take take textures, and yet another way of doing it is adding your own gui-elements.

IMO irrlicht's GUI is not for production purpose but merely for you to build a quick prototype or make an internal-use editor. However, both the built-in GUI image and button work perfectly well and sufficient for games.
