I think that too, but for not to break the interface, using indices is the best.

Ok, finally got to profiling this myself a little bit. And yeah - I got > 5% with a single node and still > 2% with lots of nodes in release (code for my tests here: http://code.google.com/p/irr-playground ... nenode.cpp - also needs the stuff in the my_media folder there).

I'd like to fix that at least for the 1.8.1 release, but really wonder if changing that is considered as breaking a library interface by distros. No idea...
