Music in a game can help set a scene, warn of changing circumstances, intensify or diffuse tension, and make load screens less onerous.
The lack of it, or bad music, can leave a great game feeling flat or be the last straw that makes users drop one that's just 'okay.'
Since all too few of us have the skills or budget to record our own or hire a composer and performers, this topic is for linking to sites with free, high quality music. Just one to start, but it's a good'un:

Note that the FMA content is almost entirely CC-by Non-Commercial

http://www.openmusicarchive.org specializes in digital versions of recordings which have gone out of copyright and are therefore in the public domain - in the UK. Many countries, the US and Mexico the most, have longer copyright terms.

A lot of music over at newgrounds.com is free, check the license of the song first;)
