3DS File With Multi/Sub-Object Material

Post by kklouzal »

Hey everyone! I've spent the previous week following some amazing tutorials for 3DS Max on YouTube to create a city mesh, here's what it looks like so far from a top-down view:
Image
The city isn't finished yet, just the roads and sidewalks are complete and I thought this would be a good point to see how it looks rendered with Irrlicht. I exported the mesh as a .3DS file as I have done in the past with previous models and loaded it up into my project however none of the materials are being displayed:

I'm thinking that Irrlicht does not support Multi/Sub-Object materials?
Here's a shot of the Slate Material Editor where you can see the entire mesh is using only 1 Multi/Sub-Object material with 16 Sub-Object material's

Any clues on whats happening here? 3DS Max gurus?
I can upload the model if you want to test yourself.
Here's a link to the tutorial playlist if anyone is interested:

I'm pretty sure the issue was due to the fact that the tutorial had me use materials for use with the "NVIDIA Mental Ray" renderer which obviously is incompatible with Irrlicht, so I switched to "Standard Material" and it's working.

Hi kklouzal,

Yeh you always have to use standard materials when in max, this is the same in any engine, even with Unity, UDK and Cryengine.
However you can make things look nicer with shaders.

I use the xoliul shader in max which really shows it how it should look in the game.
Here is a video I made of a small grenade I made. What you see in the video is exactly the 3ds max 2012 screen with the xoliul shader.
