Irrlich development paused ?

Post by musicsilence »

Hello and a Happy New Year to everybody :D

My team uses Irrlicht for a complex game development system.

We are a little concerned about the future of Irrlicht, since the last release was about 4 months ago, and there is no change to the "Development" webpage (not even a minor one).

Of course we know the author has no obligation to provide regular updates or keep to any planning. But, since we do a great deal of work based on Irrlicht, we would like to know, if possible, what's happening.

I hope we won't get anyone mad with this post, but we are a little concerned and some small information would help us a lot.

Thanks ! :o

I think niko codes bit by bit every now and then but he isn't keeping the site up-to-date. Also he doesn't check the forums frequently, once every 2 weeks or so. Perhaps he has a lot of work with school, which is normal. If you want a bit more up-to-date stuff you could use the CVS version of Irrlicht: IrrlichtNX++ (http://www.irrlichtnx.mmdevel.de/) which develops a bit faster and always gets merged with the official releases.

We just want to be sure that Niko still has plans to continue developing Irrlicht.

Maybe he can answer this, I'm sure it's information usefull for everyone.

Thanks.

Oh, he is. Just at a rather slow rate but he's still continuing (I hope so) :).

irrlichtNX is developing pretty quickly. My only concern there is that it's getting merged a bit to quickly and with limited testing.

I also miss some kind of road map for the NX development it's just bits and pieces all over the place. But it's moving.

I also hope that nico can continue developing the engine. It would have been great if he opened up the engine himself and just managed the development process and tested and added patches. This way he would have the chance to set up a road map for the engine and not need to spend so much time developing it himself.

It's his engine and I think he wants that to stay as is... anyway it's his engine and I should not give words into his mouth.

But he IS working on it, don't be afraid. He's just not a too regularry appearing person on the forum, but hey, do you want him to code or chit-chat here. ;)

Hehe, yep, sorry for all this. Right, I'm not too often in this forum, and I think, in my whole life I only visited the IRC channel (if it still exists *g*) three times. Sorry. Must be a heavy problem with the communication module in my brain.
About the development of the engine: It has not stopped at all. In the last months I only had to do a lot of work and stuff for university. I planned to create a new version during the xmas holidays, but it wasn't time enough. After the end of Jan'05, I've a lot more free time again, and I hope to bring out the next version very soon after this. Hopefully. Irrlicht is still my hobby project #1, and it is really frustrating not to have been able to create a new release during the last 4 months. But I'll keep on trying. ;)

Don't worry, I don't think there's any problem with the comm section of that brain. You wouldn't have 1200 posts if there was. ;)

Thanks, Niko, that's all we needed to know, that you keep working. We'll continue to use Irrlicht in our project, because we like it, we were only concerned about its future.

But, if we started this thread, maybe you could tell us also what are you planning for the next version

I WANT TO STICK TO ORIGINAL IRRLICHT

I wish that all new features from NX++ and the speed applied to it
will be on new release.

I wish that nico reviews all of other works and put the good stuff
to the original engine by the style of his coding.
