I forgot to make the Hair polygons double sided, i.e. copy them and then reverse the normals..

Clipmapping always works well for hair provided your clipmap is of sufficient resolution..

Separated the pieces in Blender, just to see, then found that
normals can be baked on very complex objects by first splitting them up in this way!
Then, after baking, placing the items back to where they belong..

"Looking at a monster through a telescope" type of effect..
