Plans for a game

Post by djceejay »

I'm looking to develop a shareware (or get picked up by a publisher - I can only hope :)) game using Irrlicht. I'm planning to make it over the couple of months I have off for the summer. It also has a double purpose of being a portfolio piece too.

The only problem is I need an idea that is very popular - I'm no game designer!
With what I have seen in Irrlicht any type of game is possible - FPS, Racing, Fighting. I am looking for something simple that everyone can play, so no complex game mechanics.

I also thought about making a game only available on consoles - a Hamster Ball game did well off the back of Monkey Ball.

I am open to any ideas, opinions, even MMORPGs (ala Gamedev forums!).

Thanks for looking. :D

Looks like an RPG is the most popular. How about one without wizards, goblins and little people with hairy feet.
What about an RPG set in the current time? Or what about the future - games like Phantasy Star, Deus Ex?
I'd like to include action elements rather than just stat crushing. :D

I think it needs to be a combination of genres,

I think for each genre you've listed a given company(s) pretty much already monopolizes it.

Maybe a combination of puzzle & fighting, to make puzzle fighter ?
(damn i love that game :))

ok ive got it, make a maze game, with limited time to complete each maze. and there are little bonuses that u can only afford to get if ur good at it, and they give u a few seconds added on. but yeah u can collect neat items that u keep during the whole game, like a bomb that would blow up stuff around u to clear some room, or faster feet to help out a little, but let the user choose one of various characters they want to use comlete the maze, and even award a bonus character every blue moon.

Puzzle Fighter RPG? Sounds like Puzzle Pirates.

Testur. I think FlyHigh was just using puzzle fighter as an example of making a cross genre game.
Me & FlyHigh are in talks at the moment about an original cross genre puzzle game. It's *hush* *hush* atm 8) because it's so unique. Watch this space.

Aaaah, unique is in most cases good. But it can easily fall flat on it's face. I'm getting curious to see what this idea is. When will we see it? :)

Not for a while i'm afraid Testur. We're both in uni with exams + revision for the next few weeks, so we might be looking at a july start. At the moment I'm trying to figure out how to structure the project, with regards to all the features, art style, game states, how (if?) multiplayer works, whether to put certain stuff in DLL's etc.

Its best to have thought out these things before getting down to the coding, I'm sure you'll agree :)

But that being said thanks for posting, we'll keep you updated.
