the reason why irrlicht is a great engine for beginners is not only because its easy to use,
it is also because the community has been full of helpful people who dont mind answering beginners questions.

as the community grows larger, more beginners will join the forums,
and will ask more questions, and to the dismay of some,
they will ask the same questions at least a few times.

now, to prevent our image from going from 'friendly and helpful' to 'arrogant assholes',
i would like to propose a few new simple rules:

1. if you notice someone creates a new topic for a question that has been answered a few times already, instead of posting a nasty RTFM reply causing the poor kid to piss his pants,
look up the previously answered topic and add it to the FAQ sticky, and kindly point our
new friend in the that direction.

2. dont go completely offtopic because you dont like someones signature

3. remember where you came from. you werent born a genius, and most likely still arent.

I'd actually suggest telling them to RTFM _and_ telling them where to go to look it up. This teaches them that its not good practice to cloud the forums with noize they could easily find out for themselves, and it also teaches them HOW to find out for themselves.

I think keeless is right.
And maybe we could start making some people here something like MVPs (http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/), to thank them for their help on the boards. Or I could turn that title-feature on, which gives a title to every user based on his post count.

no good idea! that has several reasons:

1. knowledge -> postaccount doesnt make sense. i think there are so much more people here with a much smaller postcount than i and they are way better than me.

2. many people will try to post just to get their postcount up, so they just spam.

3. new users that have knowledge wont be accepted as expert when they have a small post count.

but if some people help alot you could maybe add an extra title, like you suggested

maybe start a poll about that?

With the title feature, there is also custom titles, that you have to set for each user that u want to hold that title, not based on post count. for the titles that are based on post count, just have like 2 of them, 1. "Active" and 2. "Big Poster" or something lol. and then the custom titles could be IrrAdvisor and IrrExpert, and these would be awarded by admin only, not # of posts.

ooh its realy so very simple
dont : RTFM
do: RTM p. xyz
Overhead : for the 'do' option the poster need to think for a second, in contrast to the 'dont' option..

It will propl. be to mutch work for moderators to maintain a hall of fame for posters. Other forums uses a basepoint system -default 1000 then it is posible to award points to a profile if u have found answers helpfull
-again needs work from moderators / special boardfeatures

a method that i like, is the 'voluntary sign up to a mentor list'. These mentors alow people with problems to mail them programs /snippets and writes general guides in the forum -kind of FAQ, -when / if they feel the problem solutions could have general interest -if not they simply help the person who sent the email.
Alas -this is a HUGE thing to join up to -100 ths of mail weekly would not be an overestimate and for that reason the mentor system is most often a shortlived feature of any board

..personally i would be satisfied if my board questions was answered.. ;)

Ogre recently implemented the MVP feature, and its worked out great. If an mvp answers your post, its generally accepted more, and its something to shoot for
