I was wondering what everyones OS is becuase I am curently programing with visual studio .net and when programs are compiled they do not work for the win98 users unfortunetly...

Ummm... your programs won't work with: Linux, BeOS, FreeBSD, Win98, Win95, Win3.1, DOS, Mac OS X, Mac OS (below X), hmmm... some others too.

I still like win2k a lot. I think XP is win2k with a lot of makeup on top, so I'd rather get less fancyness and stay with performance and speed. Win2k is less resource-demmanding. The bad thing is that MS is already not supporting some stuff for it so in the end I guess I'll end up buying XP.

Oh yes, and I also like linux. Gentoo is my distro of choice. Vey flexible and stable. The only pain is you have to compile everything form the kernel up.

you could use a binary based distribution (Debian or Ubuntu i think are the best) but i think gentoo is better than both of them.

i use windows xp at the moment and no linux, why?

programming workflow in windows is A LOT faster than in linux with crappy kdevelop or anjuta or commandline or whatever, i tried everything and i personally think it sucks like hell, windows with devc++ or codeblocks is a lot more comfortable. not that i dont like linux, but it does not make sense to use an os which you cannot work with.

second reason and this is my biggest one is that i have a damn ati radeon graphics card in my notebook which is not good supported by linux (the ati driver is the worst piece of fu**ing poop i´ve ever seen!)

third reason is that i dont like gnome and i dont like kde. i would really love to use mac osx, its interface is so much better than anything else!

gnome: looks like win98 to me. i tried a few days to make it look good, but it simply is not possible.

kde: i dont like kde because it has 23 texteditors, 445 audioplayers, 54 graphicprograms ... you get what i mean? i dont like to have one million programs for one thing ... i mean, i more like the "only _one_ app but that does the job" sentence.

both of the DE´s are buggy compared to windows/mac, they always have some errors (small ones, but that are the ones that matter)

oh, i forgot this is not an "i really begin to dont like linux that much anymore" thread

Yeah, I can relate to that... Instead of using KDevelop and similar, I just use the good old GEdit and Emacs... Then I always keep an xterm open to the source directory to quickly 'make' my game. I seriously prefer developing on Linux to Windows, I have yet to try a Mac, but I want to.

Have you tried XFCE, WindowMaker, or Fluxbox? I like to use XFCE, super fast and a nice interface. Of course it is a little more work to get an applications menu (right-click the desktop).

I guess we are getting a little off topic here but oh well...
If I do use Windows, it is always XP.

I'll stick with windows xp. Would love to try a mac, but the price tag is over my wallets budget. (wife sets that)
I tried linux, but didn't like it at all. It's too much like compiling an app for me.
Anywho, Windows XP all the way.

apple ibook = ~ 1300-1400 €
my amilo notebook = 1699 €

the apple ibook is faster, has twice as much ram and 20gb more hdd capacity and the battery can last nearly 3 times longer (and i personally think it looks much better).

so they are not as expensive as you may think

ps: i wish i would have looked for that ibook before i bought this notebook, damn

If the options are only going to be MS, then I'd I'd say there needs to be a distinction between XP Professional and XP Home edition.
The Home Edition should never have been released...hunk of garbage - insecure, poor memory management. Blah.

My other machine is a Slack box. I second the notions you made a few posts above me.
Main thing I gotta add about the Linux interfaces, is that KDE has REALLY gotta quit with the Kthisapp, and Kthatapp nonsense.
It isn't cute or funny. Its an eyesore.

So, Win XP Professional if you intend on very many people trying out your stuff.

winXP IS just win2k with a lot of makeup.

it's true that 2000 is "better" in some ways.. as is linux or even DOS.

but what it gives up for performance and cosmetics it lacks in popularity, development, compatability, standing.

I won't tell you to use XP over 2K and I also won't make any attempt to program for anything other then the 2 most popular choices for me which is XP and Linux. The only reason I would make an attempt at linux is because they seem to be "the other half".

I could just be a top ten person all I've ever really used was windows I tried an apple laptop once and hated it. linux has the support it needs to help windows programers like me easily build for linux as well.

or do they.

I prefer open source so users if desired can build there own custom versions which is the way of the future.
