Developing for Linux?

Post by Irrlicht_Rocks »

Is there any documentation for developing on Linux using Irrlicht?
If not could somebody give me a how-to?
I have never used Linux before and am just starting to use it to develop a version of my game for Linux.

Also if I use Newton I would have to compile Newton for Linux??? I guess that's just common sense.

Anyhow, I've been developing for Windows all my life and this is a really foreign area to me.

Thanks in advance.

I never asked anyone to tell me to use the search button.
I did a search before posting this topic.
I didn't find anything that answered my questions.

the irrlicht tutorials show you to use irrlicht
the irrlicht examples show you how a makefile should look

all you have to do is type: "make" and then your irrlicht app compiles, this is not irrlicht related, if you use linux and you dont know how to use "make", please leave linux immediately.

if you do a search at the irrlicht forums for "linux", you will find several threads where irrlicht + linux is covered, which IDE´s to use, etc. ..

if you got your irrlicht application to compile on linux, you can continiue like when using windows, since irrlicht is cross-platform.

so stop telling me that you cannot find out how to get irrlicht running on linux yourself :)

Ok, thank you.

Can I use Code::Blocks as my IDE?

if you get codeblocks to compile with linux then yes you can use it. what linux distribution do you use? ive read that you can find an gentoo ebuild for codeblocks in the codeblocks.org forums.

I am using the MEPIS distribution right now. I tryed installing Gentoo but it had many errors while installing so I gave up on it.

It looks like I can grab the source for Code::Blocks.

Now, there had been a time when GFXStlyer really had some nasty way to treat stupid questions, but it was a perfectly correct answer this time. I wouldn't even other with writing to such questions, although I'm really into helping people use Linux. But why should persons working with 3D engines give tutorials on using Linux
@GFX: I really appreciate the way you're treating beginner's questions the last weeks!

Getting into trouble again GFX?

@Irrlicht_rocks: Try the Scintilla text editor; it recognizes almost every language-script out there and if you got GCC properly installed on linux and the necesary lib files in the proper directories all you have to do is hit F7 and it compiles beautifully (remember to have a make file in the same folder, you can use the one that comes with the examples). I left anjuta, eclipse, kdevelop and many other failed C++ attempts for this; which turned out to be the most simplistic but more efficient one.

http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html

ps. Don't use the bin version, it won't load all the cool stuff it has; compile your own from scratch; make sure to follow the readmes included for such task.

ps2. Final word; scite depends on a good GTK installation as well so make sure you got the libs for a proper compilation.
